WiFi setup
How to connect a screen to WiFi, regardless of which Android device you're using.
Introduction
A working WiFi connection is essential for InfoBox Digital Signage: it downloads content from the Platform, receives publish updates, and reports its Online status. The exact steps for setting up WiFi vary by device type. This article covers all three.
What you need
Have these ready:
- WiFi network name and password.
- Display powered on with the InfoBox Digital Signage or InfoBox start screen visible.
- The remote control or input device that came with your screen (if applicable).
Tip
Position the device where it has a strong WiFi signal. Avoid metal cabinets, thick walls, and metal display brackets that can attenuate WiFi.
WiFi setup on an InfoBox Basic stick
Use the included remote control:
- Press Home on the remote.
- Open the Settings menu.
- Open Network or WiFi settings.
- Pick your WiFi network from the list and enter the password.
- When connected, the device returns to InfoBox Digital Signage automatically.
WiFi setup on a native Android display
Open the display's network settings:
- Press the display's Settings, Menu, or Home button on the included remote (the exact button varies by manufacturer).
- Find the Network or WiFi section.
- Pick your WiFi network and enter the password.
- When connected, the display returns to InfoBox Digital Signage automatically.
WiFi setup on your own Android device
Most Android devices already have WiFi configured before you install InfoBox Digital Signage:
- If WiFi is already configured, you can skip this step.
- Otherwise, exit InfoBox Digital Signage, open Settings → Network, connect to WiFi, and reopen InfoBox Digital Signage.
- On Android TV-based devices, you may need a USB keyboard or the Google TV remote app to enter the WiFi password.
If WiFi won't connect
Common fixes:
- Double-check the password. Most issues are typos.
- Move the device closer to the router temporarily.
- Restart the device by unplugging power for 10 seconds.
- Test the network with another device (phone or laptop) to confirm the network is working.
- Check whether the network requires a captive portal login (common in hotels, public WiFi). Captive portals are not supported by InfoBox Digital Signage. Use a regular WPA/WPA2 network instead.
Corporate or restricted networks
For enterprise networks, make sure the following is allowed:
- Outbound traffic on port 443 (HTTPS) and port 8883 (MQTT).
- Whitelist InfoBox domains: *.infoboxi.com.
- If the network requires a proxy, contact kasper@infoboxi.com for configuration help.
Warning
Corporate networks often block non-standard ports by default. Ask your IT team in writing to whitelist *.infoboxi.com on ports 443 and 8883.
Need Ethernet instead of WiFi
Wired connection options:
- The InfoBox Basic stick is WiFi-only. If you need Ethernet, contact kasper@infoboxi.com. Ethernet-capable hardware is available on request.
- Most native Android displays and many Android TV boxes have an Ethernet port. Plug in a network cable through Settings → Network → Ethernet on those devices.
Summary
WiFi is the foundation of a reliable InfoBox screen. If issues persist after the steps above, see No network connection or contact kasper@infoboxi.com.
